Braun Lite RL 515 Electronic Flash

Up for sale is this vintage Braun Lite RL 515 Electronic Flash Unit. Considering its relatively light weight, this is a brute of a flash, delivering a guide number of 85 with ISO 25 film, with full power and about 55 with reduced power. Full-power recycle times will be 2-3 seconds and about 1 sec. at reduced power. The manufacturer rates the unit at 5200 BCPS.

  • Flash head aims up 90 degrees or down 45 degrees
  • Flash holder rotates to any angle
  • Universal bracket can be used left or right handed
  • Flash head can be mounted on a tripod or hand-held off camera
  • Beam angle variable 60 to 90 degrees

Included is the power pack which is driven by a 510-volt battery, a PC sync cord for connecting to your camera, and the original universal flash bracket. Also included is a brand new Eveready 510v battery that's good for about 1,000 to 1,500 flashes, and the original owners manual.

This unit has been tested and is working perfectly. It has a bolt replacing the original accessory shoe lock-down thumbwheel, and gaffers tape repairing the flap covering the battery compartment. It is in otherwise very good to excellent condition with only minor wear.

It takes an old-school photographer (or a neophyte who's serious about learning to expose by the numbers) to use one of these. It's totally manual. You have a choice of using the calculator dial on top of the flash head to figure out the correct camera setting, or calculating it in your own head from the guide number for the film you were using. I always preferred the latter because it was faster.

I used one of these professionally in 1973-78 for shooting weddings. I also used it for "painting" large night scenes outdoors, like this night scene of the Cabazon Calif. dinosaur with a brush fire raging across the hills in the background that I made for the Banning Record-Gazette back in the day.
