Notes:
This neck began with built-up neck blank
made from poplar. It looks, feels and acts a lot like maple, and it has a very nice
ringing tap tone that promises lots of sustain.
it's clear that tools can make it easier
to get the job done right by reducing the amount of expertise needed. In the left-side
view, I cut the side shown under my thumb using a coping saw. Pretty scary when you're
trying to cut close to final size in relatively thick wood and too difficult to
control. I decided to try something different, so I purchased a Shark Japanese-style
pullsaw. Now look at the top view where I cut the opposing side. Oh yeah ... that's it!
The Shark required a little care in getting it started because of its flexible blade, but
after it was in into the wood about ¼-inch, it was smooth sailing the rest of the way. By
the way, the Shark is scary sharp and must be treated with respect. Note the nick on my
thumb in that picture. I never did that with a hand saw before!
